Skin Care Science Meets Art and Aesthetics

A six-year collaboration between several dermatologists, a gynecologist and a world-class cosmetic chemist has turned out to be more than a journey of scientific discovery. The development of Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion by 21st Century Formulations is a merger of art and science, creating a lotion that not only scientifically hydrates and protects healthy skin and restores the health of damaged skin, but also meets critical demands for a skin care product that aesthetically feels "just right."

Walking 70 miles to see the doctor

In 2003, Kari Worth seemed to have it all — the wife and mother of a 1-year-old girl and 2-year-old boy was enjoying a new career as a freelance management consultant. In April of the same year, however — just one day after her daughter’s first birthday — Worth was diagnosed with stage four melanoma after discovering a lesion on her left ear. During her 20s, she had a cancerous growth removed from the same area, but doctors now said the cancer had spread throughout her body. .

Japanese firm uses cosmetics to treat patients with skin disorders

TOKYO, Japan: Cosmetic products are not just for beautifying oneself. They can also be used in therapy to treat those who suffer from skin disorders and scarring. A Japanese company is introducing products and techniques to help such customers with special needs. Privacy is guaranteed on one floor of Shiseido's building in Tokyo's Ginza. Customers with skin problems can schedule private counselling sessions in rooms set aside for them. Shiseido claims 3.3 million people, or about 3 percent of the Japanese population, suffer from skin problems such as blue birthmarks. And it has opened a centre where they provide services for people with such skin problems. So far, Shiseido has treated more than 700 customers. The Social Beauty Care Centre was opened in June 2006 to provide those in need of therapy make-up advice.

Armed Forces Multi-Million Dollar Effort To Help Soldiers

A procedure currently performed all over the world for cosmetic purposes might also improve wound healing and limb function for soldiers who are severely hurt and scarred during combat. Dr. Adam Katz, plastic surgeon and researcher at the University of Virginia Health System, will conduct research in this area under the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM). White House officials announced the formation of AFIRM, which has received more than $80 million for research.

Katz, who is the only Virginia doctor to be a part of AFIRM, will study the use of fat grafting for wounds and severe burns to improve their healing and/or to minimize their associated scarring. In one envisioned study, burn patients who have received skin grafts will receive an autologous fat transplant, in which their own fat tissue will be harvested, cleaned, and finally re-injected beneath the skin-grafted area.

Stacked Building

* "Doing things most builders would be scared of"

Price: Varies with project

Where you can get it: Nationwide

Business owner: Adam Stack

Location: Boulder

Tidbits: Once the youngest licensed general contractor in Colorado, Stack has much to be proud of. Surprisingly, it's not his business accomplishments or reputation as a world-class rock climber that he views as his crowning achievements, but the relationships he maintains with his clients.

"Most contractors come, remodel your house, and when the job is done, you don't ever hear from them," Stack said. "Usually trying to get them back to your house to do random little things is kind of a nightmare."

Stack says this is where contractors get their bad reputation.

Project promotes locally grown produce Wilson County News April 22, 2008

Consumers on the lookout for locally grown, organic products now have an opportunity to address their needs. A Wilson County area list, consisting of organically and sustainably grown goods, organic or conventionally grown, and locally grown, is now available online. The Local Food List Web site is being developed by Shannon Davenport, founder of the Local Food Project. The Local Food Project is Davenports pet project. She was interested in finding sources for anything locally grown, particularly eggs. The purpose of the list is simply to get the word out to Wilson County residents that there is locally grown food available just a phone call away, she said. With the help and encouragement of the Coopers at Coopers Garden Place, Davenport contacted area gardeners and established commercial growers to join her in the project, and to be added to the Local Food List.

An Open Letter to Oprah Winfrey From NaturallyCurly.com

Dear Oprah: It was with surprise and disappointment that members of our community at NaturallyCurly.com alerted us to your Great American Haircut Makeovers.

In case after case, beautiful waves, curls and kinks were beaten into submission with blow dryers, flatirons and extensions. In one of the most curious cases, a beautiful woman - who was wearing a gorgeous and undoubtedly hard-won afro - was given stick-straight extensions.
