Joan Lau: Maybe it's time to give your life a makeover
AT the age of 40, a friend of mine discovered her girlish side. It's not like this friend is a man who decided he needed to get in touch with his feminine side. No, this is a 40-year-old woman and there you have it. You see, she never had problems projecting herself as a woman; she was just never a girl. Till now. Okay, this is where it gets slightly complicated. I promise it gets easier and yes, there is a point to all this. Like many other women of her generation, my friend was taught by her mother to be independent and strong. She could open her own doors, carry her own luggage and generally take care of herself. And her family. A good-looking woman, she didn't wear much make-up and if you asked her to describe herself in one word, she would say: "Sturdy." And she was happy.
Special Reports
In a place just a few miles from sandy beaches and soaring skyscrapers, white stone villas and sky-blue swimming pools, it seems the epitome of irony and injustice that over 1.5 million people would be subjected to drinking sewage-contaminated water. When there is such a fine line bordering wealth and poverty, privilege and need, how unsettling to realize that just a stone's throw away, mothers and fathers must nourish their families with poison. As if the occupier could not find one more creative way to torment his victim. The greatest outrage is that such a reality is the decided policy of the Israeli government. It is decried by the most prominent human rights and humanitarian groups throughout the world, and yet it is increasingly enhanced by Israel and shamelessly backed and justified by the US.
Mother's hug really does ease a baby's pain, McGill University researcher says
Every child believes a mother's hug and kiss has healing properties that can make pain go away faster. A Montreal study has discovered a cuddle truly does lessen babies' suffering. It works even on the extremely premature, infants born after 28 to 31 weeks of gestation. But not any kind of hug will do. It has to be skin to skin and chest to chest. .
Bulgaria`s rescued bears still dance alone
Misho got up and danced for us the minute we peered through the electrified fence. We watched him swaying backwards and forwards, padding the bare ground with his paws, as he`d done a thousand times before. As long as we looked he performed. It was a mindless and pathetic soft-shoe shuffle, learnt through torture. Only as we dragged ourselves away, tears in our eyes, did this gigantic creature stop the world`s saddest dance. It will take Misho, the latest arrival at Dancing Bears Park, Bulgaria`s brown bear sanctuary, months to throw off a lifetime`s cruel conditioning. Even then, he`ll never be quite normal, explained Petar, our guide. Last July this 19-year-old dancing bear joined 24 others at the park near Belitsa, deep in the Pirin Mountains, making him the last to be rescued from the humiliation of performing before paying audiences.
