Tri-C JazzFest pays tribute to Frank Sinatra
With the 29th annual Tri-C JazzFest in full swing, Ol' Blue Eyes lives! Singer-guitarist John Pizzarelli will be joined by the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra for a Sinatra tribute concert Friday, April 18, at Playhouse Square's Allen Theatre, part of the 29th annual Tri-C JazzFest. Latter-day crooner Michael Buble isn't part of the Tri-C JazzFest's salute to Frank Sinatra, although you would be hard-pressed to find a more fervent Sinatra devotee, as you'll see in our Q&A with Buble. Upscale clothing designer Stella McCartney has launched an e-commerce site at www.stellamccartney.com for U.S. consumers and plans to introduce one for fashion-savvy shoppers in United Kingdom this fall. The new site offers cruelty-free fashions that do not use animal skins or products, organic skin care and carbon-neutral delivery options for the environmentally conscious. The web store is another step in the companys international expansion and marketing efforts. The label launched a branding site last month and recently opened several retail stores worldwide. The new online store offers much of Stella McCartneys Spring and Summer 2008 collections, including ready-to-wear items, shoes made without animal products, bags and accessories. The site also offers perfumes, organic skincare products and lingerie.
GHX Announces 2008 Best In Class Award Winners
GHX today announced the winners of the fifth annual Best In Class Awards, recognizing 29 medical-surgical manufacturers that have achieved significant market share positions for distributed products through the end of 2007. Awards were presented to companies that achieved the highest year-over-year market share growth in 35 different product categories and those that achieved the top share position in five specific markets. The awards were presented on Friday, April 18, 2008 during a recognition ceremony in Chicago at the 8th Annual GHX Supply Chain Summit, the largest forum in the U.S. focused on both the buy and sell side of the healthcare supply chain. .
Deciphering polygamy chic
For a society accustomed to the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, the images of the women from the polygamist compound in Texas are almost shocking in their understatement: Ankle-length dresses, makeup-free faces, hauntingly uniform hair. And while no one would accuse the women of making a fashion statement, the pioneer-style outfits are a rare example of how in an age of overexposure, modesty, too, can give pause. The puff-sleeved, pastel dresses worn by the women in the sect are a combination of 19th-century wear and 1950s clothing that was adopted when the church took a conservative turn, according to Janet Bennion, an anthropologist who studies polygamist women. The dresses are meant to show modesty and conformity: They cover to the ankles and wrists and are often worn over other garments or pants, making sure every possibly provocative inch of skin is covered.
