| Chiropractor's fundraiser to help ailing girl's family with medical bills
Watching Breann LaManna chase her little brother around the house and stroke the hair of her Hannah Montana doll, you would assume she is a typical 11-year-old. But as you listen to her describing the agonizing chemotherapy treatments and pain she endured while fighting stage III Hodgkin Lymphoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, you can see that she has survived many hardships which forced her to grow up too soon. "The hardest part was the chemotherapy. I wasn't eating at all, and everything I ate came back up," said the bright-eyed Breann, who would quickly switch gears from discussing her medication schedule and experiences in the hospital to giggling with her family and talking about her return to school in March after being home-schooled since 2006. When she was 9, Breann's parents, Maria and Chris, took her to the doctor for allergies and a cough that was getting progressively worse.

St. Petersburg council hopefuls talked about race, stadium
ST. PETERSBURG — No topic was off limits, not even skin color. The five City Council applicants vying for Earnest Williams' vacant District 6 seat fielded questions from the public Monday night. More than 50 people showed up at City Hall to pose questions about budget cuts, the Tampa Bay Rays' proposed stadium and whether race matters when representing a predominately black district. Karl Nurse, the only white applicant, said the district's increasingly diverse population deserves a color-blind leader. More than 55 percent of residents in District 6 are black. The district includes parts of Midtown, uptown, downtown and Coquina Key, are black. "You need to address issues in a fashion that does not pertain to race," said Nurse. But others said a shared cultural background make its easier to tackle problems in the black community.
Schering-Plough Announces Imperfect Contraceptive Use Impacts Women's Emotional Well-Being
Schering-Plough Corporation announced results of a recently completed study showing that non-compliance with combined hormonal contraceptives has noticeable effects on women's emotional well-being, prompted requests for physicians' advice and led to increased use of emergency contraception. Results were presented in Madrid, Spain, and were published earlier this month in Contraception. The cross-sectional, multi center study was designed to assess the self-described impact of noncompliant behavior among 26,250 current users, aged 18 to 49, of three combined hormonal contraceptive methods, the combined pill, the skin patch and NUVARING(R) (etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring), the vaginal ring. "The study included questions about attitudes and psychological impact of inconsistent use of the contraceptive method when confronted with noncompliant behavior, an issue that has been poorly characterized in previous studies," commented Dr Inaki Lete, Hospital Santiago Apostol, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain and lead investigator.

If you plan to tan this summer, or even if tanning is a thing from the past, two studies released Monday will help people evaluate their risk of developing melanoma. A study published in JAMA Archives confirmed that skin lesions which measure 6mm or more are twice as likely to be cancerous as lesions less than 6 mm, or about one-fourth of an inch in diameter. NYU researchers base their findings on a study of more than 1,300 patients. .
