Man murdered in drive-by shooting

A man was shot dead on Wednesday night by an unknown assailant while walking on Maxey Drive, Dyersburg Police said.

The man, whose identity had not been confirmed by police as of posting, was reported to have been killed by a drive-by shooting at about 10:53 p.m., said DPD spokesman Capt. Steve Isbell, from a 911 call made from a neighbor's residence.

Witnesses described the dead person as a young black man with a short fade haircut. He was wearing a black pullover sweater, black jeans and black shoes when he was shot near the parking lot curb in front of the 1500 block of Maxey Drive. Neighbors in the public housing units next to and adjacent to the site of the murder reported hearing a single gun shot before looking outside to see the man flat on his back.

Police arrived and immediately began to attempt to resuscitate the fallen man, who witnesses said was unconscious and taking shallow breaths.

Boy flees Islamic school that makes beggars of African kids

On the day he decided to run away, 9-year-old Coli awoke on a filthy mat.

Like a pup, he lay curled against the cold, pressed between dozens of other children sleeping head-to-toe on the concrete floor. His T-shirt was damp with the dew that seeped through the thin walls. The older boys had yanked away the square of cloth he used to protect himself from the draft. He shivered.

50 CENT, UNIVERSAL SUED BY YAYO'S TEEN VICTIM: Rapper accused of promoting 'gangsta lifestyle.' Plus, artist in talks to join indie film.

*The 14-year-old boy who was allegedly assaulted by associates of 50 Cent has joined his mother in a lawsuit against the rapper and his label, Universal, for promoting a "gangsta lifestyle."

Filed Wednesday by James Rosemond and his mother Cynthia Reed, the lawsuit claims Universal Music Group and its labels Interscope Records, G-Unit Records and Shady Records are ultimately responsible for the assault because they encourage artists to pursue violent, criminal lifestyles.

Rosemond says he was assaulted on a Manhattan sidewalk in March 2007 by four men, including G-Unit rapper Tony Yayo and his employee Lowell Fletcher.

Girl goes to skin clinic with acne, damages eye

TREATMENT FOR acne at a skin clinic landed 18-year-old Jaishree Nair (name changed) in the intensive care unit of a city hospital with temporary blindness and fluid in the brain. Jaishree paid Rs 20,000 for a three-month acne removal course at Kaya Skin Clinic.

She was prescribed Minocin - a potent antibiotic for the duration of the course. Within a month of treatment she developed constant headaches and blurred vision.

The treating dermatologist at Kaya insisted that she continue with the drug. "We suspected sinusitis or increase in eye power for failing eye-sight.

But nothing came from those check-ups and the doctors suggensted that we consult a neurosurgeon. Eventually we got to know that the headache was because of increased pressure in her brain being caused by the drug given by the skin clinic," said B.

U.S. teams aim to grow ears, skin for war wounded

By Kristin Roberts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Teams of university scientists backed by U.S. government funds hope to grow new skin, ears, muscles and other body tissue for troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Defense Department said on Thursday.

The $250 million effort aims to address the Pentagon's unprecedented challenge of caring for troops returning from the war zones with multiple traumatic injuries, many of which would have been fatal years ago.

"We've had just over 900 people, men, some women with amputations of some kind or another since the start of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq," said Ward Casscells, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs. Many have also suffered burns, spinal cord injuries and vision loss.

"Getting these people up to where they are functioning and reintegrated, employed, able to help their families and be fully participating members of society, this is our task," he said.

Summer getaways: Yellowstone attracts visitors with skin-melting pool

Life can get pretty hectic here on campus. Why not spend your summer communing with nature? That's what Yellowstone National Park is all about. With its bizarre yet fascinating collection of geysers and hot springs, it routinely leaves park visitors thinking, "Wow, this planet really is a living organism."

OK, that first paragraph sounded a lot like a travel brochure, but Yellowstone really is pretty neat. If you've spent all your money on overpriced textbooks and Chartwells cuisine, it's a good way to travel cheap. So, grab your knee-high moccasins, don your fringy leather coat, put on your coonskin cap and get ready to live the life of a real mountain man.

By night, stay in one of Yellowstone's lodges or hotels. By day, visit some of nature's oddest sites.

Old Faithful is a definite must-see, although it's kind of boring to stand alongside about 50 other weary tourists for an estimated 45 to 125 minutes, waiting for it to erupt as some obnoxious kid pulls on his mom's fanny pack and whines about how long it's taking.
