Start spring with beautiful legs and feet

Hamburg - Out of sight, out of mind: while our hands typically get washed and moisturized every day, care for our feet and legs tends to be an afterthought. This is especially true in the cold-weather months when thick socks and heavy shoes are the rule and keep the feet and legs well concealed. But once winter is over, the legs and feet look uncared for.

Short skirts and open shoes expose the dry patches, bothersome cellulite and fungus skin. When these conditions occur, it's high time for a special beauty treatment to tackle the problem, and aesthetics is not the only reason to do.

"Regular foot care also prevents many tough problems," said Mechthild Geismann of the German association of podiatrists and clinicians who offer foot care.

Britta John of Germany's Beauty Alliance, an association of perfumeries, said foot care should occur on a weekly basis and it should include trimming the nails and cuticles, removal of calluses and an application of moisturizer.

Biz Buzz: Winery prepared to pour in south SLO

San Luis Obispo's newest boutique winery with a tasting room is set to open this week in the south end of town.

Stephen Ross Wine Cellars is moving from Santa Maria into its new location at 178 Suburban Road — just in time for its annual Adopt-A-Barrel Dinner on Saturday.

"The biggest neat thing about this building (with more than 8,600 square feet of space) is that it will have a tasting room," winery owner Stephen Dooley said. "I didn't want a tasting room without production tied to it."

The new winery will be capable of producing about 15,000 cases of wine a year, about 6,000 more cases than Dooley's current output.

Dooley has been searching for a winery location closer to his home and the company's Edna Valley vineyards for several years.

Going skin-deep, or not!

Sme 10 years ago, the concept of a spa inside a mall was unheard of. Fast-forward to today's lifestyle: malls have already become home to everything anybody can imagine – skin clinics included.

From the pioneering efforts of BodyTune, a spa that specializes in traditional Thai massage, comes yet another innovation to its already excellent array of services. "It's been brewing for quite some time and we were just looking for the perfect moment to make it known, not only to our loyal clientele, but to the general public as well. We wanted it to be priced competitively without sacrificing the quality of service that the spa has always been known for," dermatologist and BodyTune consultant Dr. Cecile Barin tells this writer.

Dr. Barin is talking about the spa's newest offering – the inclusion of dermatologic and medical treatments alongside the spa's exceptional massage therapies alongside other recently introduced new massage treatments such as the Xiamen Foot Massage, BodyTune Signature Massage, and Balinese Massage.

Winner Gail reveals new look

EIGHT months after her journey began Gail Farrow looks radiant after receiving more than £2,000 worth of cosmetic treatment thanks to the Wiltshire Times' Turn Back The Clock competition.

Miss Farrow, of Lister Grove in Lower Westwood, was selected from a shortlist of five back in August by Dr Rupert Gabriel of Snowberry Lane Clinic in Melksham, who carried out the treatments.

As a bonus prize Miss Farrow, 54, was treated to a free makeover by hairdressers and beauticians at TLC in Sycamore Grove, Trowbridge Her application stood out as she had gone through a lot of troubles in her life but had never complained or asked for anything.

She had previously worked with elderly people and fostered 15 children but has been unable to work for a decade due to spinal problems and faces a lifetime of hospital visits.

Charisse: Hushing talk of race, gender

This just in: Barack Obama is black.

The Constitution, as Justice John Marshall Harlan liked to say, is color-blind.

But most people aren't.

So I think the outrage over Geraldine Ferraro's comment that Obama wouldn't be where he was today if he were white is way overblown.

OK, it was a dumb thing to say, but I don't think it was racist or that she deserved to lose her job with the Clinton campaign.

As former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich put it, "Are we now going to say that nobody is allowed to notice that Sen. Clinton is female and nobody is allowed to notice that Sen. Obama is African American ... Are we not allowed to be honest?"

It is honest to say that Obama's race has helped make him a media darling and that his candidacy has energized black voters.

Five secrets for better digital photos

Digital cameras have raised the bar. With no more worries about wasting film, the number of family pictures per event can easily number into the hundreds. But if you're not getting many keepers, it may not be the camera, it may be you. Here are some tips to improve your picture-taking.

Step back for portraits

Far too many people think they should get close and personal when taking a portrait. Cameras can make features look distorted up close. For example, noses and eyes can appear exaggeratedly large.

When shooting portraits, try standing about 15 feet from your subject. For a tight shot of the subject's face, use your digital camera's zoom to get the cropping you need.

For full-length shots, zoom out. But use care. Wide-angle shots introduce distortion, which leads to unflattering shots.
