| Skin bank: Donate skin and save life
Pratima (name changed), who was brought to a municipal hospital here with 50 per cent burn injury in a dowry related case died after five days. But Ramakant who received around 75 per cent burns went back home from a burn dedicated centre after a month as he received skin grafting during the treatment period. Pratima would have had a chance to live only if she had received skin donation from a skin bank or some volunteers just like Ramakant who had the opportunity to get skin donated by his relatives. "Skin is needed in major burns and other injuries where it helps to prevent infections, decreases pain and provides mechanical protection and thus helps faster healing and save life," said Dr Sunil Keswani, Plastic Surgeon and Director of the National Burn Centre (NBC) located at Airoli in Navi Mumbai.
Jeff Ball: Slow-release fertilizer best benefits lawn soil
It's decision time again. Every year we all have to face more than a dozen piles of bags of lawn fertilizer. How to decide? Every brand has different NPK numbers, like 29-6-10. One bag says it covers 5,000 square feet of lawn and another, which looks the same size, says it covers 15,000 square feet. The prices for a bag range from $10 to $40. How to compare prices with all those variables? Guess what? The price is not the issue you should be worried about. It is the form of nitrogen and how much of it is water insoluble that is the biggest concern. You calculate percentage of water insoluble nitrogen (WIN) by looking to the back of the bag and reading the figures for the amount of nitrogen in that bag. You want the WIN to be at least 50 percent of all the nitrogen in the bag.
Injecting New Ideas into Drug-Delivery Systems
To get effectively from point A to point B, you need a safe and reliable mode of transportation. If your brakes are shot or your radiator is on the fritz, a faulty vehicle can break down and leave you stranded on the side of the road. Likewise, drug-delivery devices are the vehicles ensuring that critical treatments safely reach their destinations and their reliability is equally—if not more—important. Because if these delivery systems fail, you may find yourself in a dire situation where even AAA can’t help. Luckily, drug-delivery technology appears to be advancing at a rapid clip. Baby boomers with longer life spans are placing a demand on the drug-delivery market for products that are convenient, safe, targeted, and user-friendly. Furthermore, a distinct trend toward home care and self-administration, as well as a more vocal and involved patient base, are requiring that drug-delivery OEMs step out of their comfort zones.
Are your pet and garden in harmony?
Many dog owners seem to feel that having a dog (or two or three) means they can no longer have a garden. Perhaps Fido dug up the flower bed or Fifi chased a squirrel through the vegetable garden and in the process destroyed several plants. Now, granted, your furry friend has no idea why some plants are more treasured than others, but that doesn't mean you can't have a garden to enjoy. Here are a few ways to keep your pup out of your petunias: Set your rules early and enforce them. Don't allow your dog to dig in the dirt over the winter and then expect him to stay out once you have planted in the spring. Use decorative but substantial fences to protect the garden areas. Encourage behavior you want your dog to repeat. When he plays in the grass, praise him and play with him.

I didn't expect less from the US...Nothing is as important than the fact to have more NATO countries near Russia, and even more flesh blood that is going to be killed because of your politics...the less US soldiers die, the better... (Ana, 1 April 2008 13:21) .

Animal patients beam over laser success
Sam loves chasing squirrels in the backyard of his Urbandale home. But one squirrel got the best of him. He was on the tree-climbing, acorn-hording rodent's tail when it suddenly changed direction. Sam tried to quickly compensate and - snap - his anterior cruciate ligament, more commonly called the ACL, was torn. But thanks to advances in medicine being adopted by local veterinarians, Sam will be up and running after the bushy-tailed foe in no time. .
Heating pains: Aid still available to offset high cost of staying warm in the Granite State
From piling on extra sweaters to closing off rooms to cranking up wood stoves and space heaters, New Hampshire residents remain locked in a bitter battle against crushing home heating costs and a winter that won't acknowledge spring. "It's hard. Very hard," said Lillian Provencher, a 72-year-old widow who lives alone in Bedford. "I lived here all my life. I paid taxes all my life. And what I get in fuel assistance doesn't even pay for a full tank of oil,'' said Provencher, a retired home-care provider and clothing mill worker. "Pretty soon, it's going to be between medicine and oil." The $525 Provencher said she received in fuel assistance this winter bought a mere 168 gallons, hardly topping the halfway mark on her tank. She paid for the remainder of her oil from her pension and Social Security or, if need be, her savings.
