Warning: Savage Love is an adult sex advice column. The contents of this article may be offensive to some people. And Utahns.

Hey, everybody: If you missed last week’s column, I’m taking a week off because, well, go read last week’s column if you care to know. Here’s an old column—from May 24, 1995—to tide you over until my return next week. It not only features my mother, but also my boyfriend’s very first mention in the column. And as you’ll see, last week wasn’t the first time I gave Mom the credit for my very curious career. —Dan

You recently wrote something about people who "are only attracted to amputees." Well, I personally have been attracted to female amputees for as long as I can remember. Have other people written you about this amputee attraction phenomenon? I get very excited when I come across a single-legged girl crutching along, or encounter a pretty young woman with an empty sleeve dangling where an arm should be.

Pretty lucrative

Frustrated by insurance paperwork, managed-care directives and what they view as inadequate reimbursements, many physicians are expanding their practices to include procedures that aren't tied to any of those things.

They're offering extensive -- and often expensive -- menus of treatments with names straight out of a sci-fi thriller.

Plasma skin regeneration. Laser resurfacing. Radio-frequency skin tightening. Pulsed-light photofacial. Botulinum-toxin injection.

In the medical field, such treatments are characterized as minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

The physicians offering them have another term: a financial shot in the arm.

"All of our costs of practicing are going up. There's not a single area I can think of that's gone down," said Dr.

Clarence Brown: The Forgotten Director

Last month, the posh, 200-year-old castle-like estate known as Kilruddery House, near Dublin, Ireland, offered a special Valentine's Day showing of a film called The Eagle, a 1925 silent starring Rudolph Valentino as a stylishly vengeful cossack. Part swashbuckler, part romantic melodrama, part sly screwball comedy, it was one of Valentino's last films, and has a reputation among some critics as his best. The audience of about 60, mostly affluent but diverse in age, laughed at the funny parts and applauded the good guy. The same movie was honored recently in Chicago, at Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival.

The movie's director, one of the most successful of Hollywood's Golden Age, eventually made more than 50 films. He was nominated for six Academy Awards. Scholars credit him with “discovering" Greta Garbo, and he's also credited with advancing the early careers of Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, and others whose names are better known than his.

Fitness: Health fair holds special interest for high school senior

A lot of Sarah Bruce's friends get a little grossed out in science class when they're examining a real heart - or any other organ or major muscle, for that matter - and studying how it works.

"I'm fascinated by all that," Bruce said with a laugh. Circumstances have taught her to appreciate the body's inner workings.

A few years ago, Bruce underwent open-heart surgery to correct a malfunction in that oh-so-critical muscle.

As soon as doctors gave her the OK, she was back on the soccer field. She made the VIS all-state second team and All-Metro second team last year playing for Saint Gertrude High School. A senior this year, she's in the starting lineup again for the all-girls school.

A young woman like Bruce, who had her health and fitness threatened at an early age, is probably always going to be mindful of the choices she makes and how they affect her body.

Use Color To Add Spring To Your Makeup

Spring cleaning isn't just for your closet. It's for your makeup, too.

And updating your look is a lot more fun than tackling an overflowing closet.

What's hot this spring, and how can you update your look for the warmer weather?

A splash of color on the eyes, cheeks and lips, says Chuck Hezekiah, known as "Mr. Makeover" in the beauty industry.

Hezekiah was in town recently as part of "The Great Beauty Tour," a cross-country bus tour created by Maybelline New York and Garnier Nutrioniste to educate women on skin care and makeup.

Inside their traveling studio, Hezekiah and three makeup experts offered visitors one-on-one beauty consultations to help them take the guesswork out of choosing and using skin-care products and cosmetics.
