Fine Living: Marin skin care producers prove beauty doesn't have to be toxic

I'M NOT a frivolous skin care or cosmetic consumer. I don't like looking through a drawer full of barely used jars of creams, tubes of hair product or other beauty enhancers. And ever since Marin resident Karen Behnke, head of Juice Beauty, an organic skin-care line, told me that skin absorbs more than 60 percent of what we put on it, I'd rather not put on anything toxic.

I really just want products that do what they promise, feel and look good, wear well, don't make my skin react and are toxic-free.

So, I was curious when I got an e-mail from Katie Watts, the IJ calendar editor, who told me about a lip balm she liked "because it's light and silky and the lavender flavor is so exotic and unexpected."

Her lavender balm ($5) for chapped lip prevention (the moisturizing mandarin or vanilla is better for soothing chapped lips) is from BeesWork, a company in Larkspur that prides itself on high-quality, synthetic-free products.

How To ... Use chocolate for your skin

Anyone who still thinks chocolate is just for eating -- and maybe drinking -- is well behind the times. Just talk with friends or browse the Internet: People are using chocolate to make soap, finger paint, candles and even sculptures. And chocolate skin-care products, for use in spas and at home, also have made their way into popular culture.

For many raw foodies, it's not just about feeling great. They contend that people can get the benefit of chocolate's healthful properties by putting it on their skin. "It didn't make sense to be pure on the inside, eating a diet that was 90 percent raw, and then put all these products with preservatives on my skin," said Lisa Lennon, 40, an artist and co-founder of U.K.-based Raw Gaia, which has a Raw Chocolate Face Pack. The company specializes in organic and raw skin care products.

Monthly self-examinations urged

Breast self-examination should be done after the end of a woman's menstrual period. Some experts recommend seven to 10 days afterwards; others recommend immediately afterwards.

The important thing is to do it after a woman's period ends, rather than before it starts, because hormones involved in menstruation can affect what a woman finds in her breast, said Blanchard Valley Hospital breast health nurse Debra Kuhlman.

Women no longer menstruating should simply perform the exam at the same time every month.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation offers the following self-examination tips for women:

Lie down on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder.

Check your right breast with the pads of the three middle fingers on your left hand.

A Large Open Label, Non-Comparative, Phase III Study Of The Multi-Targeted Kinase Inhibitor Sorafenib In European ...

UroToday.com - Dr. Verzoni presented a trial to collect safety and efficacy data on sorafenib from a large and broad study population reflecting clinical practice. This nonrandomized, open-label study included male and female patients, aged ≥18, with an ECOG PS 0 2 and a life expectancy >2 months. Patients had to be unsuitable for or have failed prior cytokine therapy. Controlled, asymptomatic brain metastases were allowed. Patients received continuous therapy with sorafenib 400 mg twice daily until disease progression, intolerable toxicity, or withdrawal of consent. Dose increases were not permitted. Recruitment was planned to continue until regulatory approval of sorafenib for advanced RCC. Study assessments were conducted at baseline and then monthly. Adverse events were graded according to NCI CTCAE v 3.0 criteria.

New Molecule Shows Promise In Patients With Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma

A novel molecule, GDC-0449, shrinks tumors for patients with advanced basal cell carcinoma with limited side effects, suggesting a viable new treatment option for patients with the advanced form of this cancer, according to research presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Basal cell carcinoma affects about one million people a year, and a very small fraction of these patients have disease that is not curable with surgery. We currently do not have any treatments that can effectively slow tumor growth in these advanced patients. This finding has enormous implications in this population, said Daniel D. Von Hoff, M.D., physician in chief at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and chief medical officer for the Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute at Scottsdale Healthcare in Arizona.

Pregnant discharge

JEAN (not her real name) is happily expecting her first child. She is five months pregnant and the pregnancy is smooth sailing so far.

I got a distress call from her wanting to see me urgently. I obliged.

I have this vaginal discharge that started last night, she complained.

Did you have to wear a pad? I asked.

Yes, but only just the one, was her reply. I was alarmed.

Did it feel like something warm streaming down your thighs?

No was her prompt reply.

Why are you asking me all these questions, Doc? she inquired with justification. I told her that I wanted to make sure that it was not a burst water-bag.

How can you confirm that? she asked.

Well, I will have to do an internal examination of the vagina and see for myself.
