Hey, everybody: If you missed last week's column, I'm taking a week off because, well, go read last week's column if you care to know. Here's an old column — from May 24, 1995 — to tide you over until my return next week. It not only features my mother, but also my boyfriend's very first mention in the column. And as you'll see, last week wasn't the first time I gave Mom the credit for my very curious career. — Dan

Passover traditions in Jewish households include Seder meal

For Passover novices, an invitation to a Seder can be exciting, and a bit intimidating.

The most widely celebrated Jewish festival, Passover (which begins at sundown Saturday, April 19), also known by its Hebrew name Pesach, commemorates the ancient Israelites' liberation from Egyptian slavery.

Passover lasts eight days and begins with two nights of Seders. Traditions vary greatly depending on a family's background.

Most Jews eschew "the five species of grains" - wheat, rye, oats, barley and spelt, all of which contain gluten.

The exception is matzo, which is made from wheat, but has not been allowed to ferment. Matzo must be baked within 18 minutes of the flour being combined with water.

Fruit is always a safe bet for a Passover meal, as are potatoes and other root vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, eggs, fish, dairy and meat (although, in accordance with kosher laws, meat and dairy must be served separately).

Many Japanese cosmetic firms targeting mature women

TOKYO : Japan is one of the world's fastest aging nations, and a growing number of cosmetic firms is turning this to their advantage by targeting women age 40 and above. Make-up for mature women was practically non-existent in the past - but not anymore. Just in March, one of Japan's largest cosmetic makers launched a new brand which seems to be getting a positive response. Yoshie Eguchi, a 73-year-old customer, said, "I've been made-up with a pat. It's not heavy. It's not like I've been really made up. It feels light." Junko Asaka, Associate General Manager, Prestige Marketing Group, Kanebo, said, "Those in their 50s, 60s...many Japanese ladies groom themselves nicely. But there's one point that's been missing. Their make-up base has a matte finish, and there's no sheer. The Chicca brand places emphasis on the sheer." The brand's eye shadows and lipsticks seem to be well received too as they bring a lighter colour to the aging skin.

Reversing the effects of motherhood

Think Botox and you probably think corporate high-flyers or celebrities whose fortune relies on their faces, but it's another type of woman who is responsible for the huge rise in demand for "non-surgical cosmetic procedures".

Ordinary, everyday Australian mothers - the ones who do the school runs and maybe juggle a part-time job with home and family responsibilities - are wanting to reclaim what age and children have ravaged.

And they are somehow finding the time and the money to do so, even if they're not always telling their partners about it.

"There's the phenomenon of the mother who comes in and says, 'Just do what it takes,"' says Marilyn Cassetta, cosmetic nurse at Silkwood Medical, Bondi Junction. "It's about themselves, not about anyone else.

Rickets cases: A medical time bomb

There's a lot about Jefferson Quishpe that isn't unusual for a 13-year-old boy. He loves Dragon Ball video games. He despises vegetables. He wears his hair short and spiky. But the similarities fade on stifling hot days, when Jefferson refuses to put on a pair of shorts.

''Everybody can see my legs and I don't want them to,'' he says, staring down at his Nike P-Rod sneakers.

Crooked legs like Jefferson's haven't been seen much since the 19th century, when rickets -- the childhood disease that softened Jefferson's bones -- crippled kids working in factories. Rickets is caused by extreme vitamin D deficiency; vitamin D, necessary for the body to absorb calcium, comes primarily from the sun.

Rickets was all but wiped out in the 1930s with the advent of fortified milk and kids spending more time outside.
