FDA approves Cimzia as treatment for Crohn's disease

A new drug has been approved to help sufferers of Crohn's disease, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today. Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) received approval for adults with moderate to severe Crohn's disease who have not responded to conventional therapies. This product was approved with a Medication Guide.

Crohn's disease is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease that affects more than 1 million men and women worldwide. It has no cure and its cause is unknown. Crohn's can cause diarrhea, fever, rectal bleeding, malnutrition, narrowing of the intestinal tract, obstructions, abscesses, cramping, and abdominal pain. It also can lead to abnormal connections (fistulas) leading from the intestine to the skin or internal organs.

"Crohn's is a debilitating disease that disrupts the quality of life for its sufferers," said Julie Beitz, M.D., director of the Office of Drug Evaluation III for the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Oneida reviews tattoo parlor

A tattoo parlor will open in Oneida for the first time since the 19th century if the Planning Commission approves Jarrod Genge's plans for "The Electric Pen" tonight.

Last month, the Common Council voted to lift the tattoo parlor ban that was first put into place in the late 1800s and reaffirmed in 1989. With the old ordinance out of the way, Genge moved quickly. Tonight, the Planning Commission will review his plans for 108 Madison St.

Cassie Rose, the city's planning and community development director, said Genge could leave the meeting with approval "contingent upon several codes issues," like plumbing, wiring, and the safety of the entranceways and stairway.

"There's nothing that would stop him from eventually opening," she said. "There's nothing out of the ordinary."

There are no local or county laws in place for inspecting or regulating tattoo parlors, but Genge has vowed to abide by industry standards that assure customers' health and safety.

Lost Journal For some, the glasses are always half-empty

Journal entry: February 12, 2007 (age 37)

Eyes are the windows to the soul. Therefore, eyeglasses are the outside pane of double-paned windows to the soul. I could expound further on this analogy, but tears really aren't the inter-pane condensation of the soul. What I am trying to say is that for 34 years, my glasses have sent a message to the world about who I am.
